The Prince William County Fire Marshal’s Office will officially launch a new Fire Protection Permit (FPP) specifically designed for Emergency and Maintenance Repairs on July 1, 2026.

“Our goal is to always keep Prince William County safe while remaining a supportive, efficient partner to our local business and contracting communities,” said Thomas L. LaBelle, Fire & Rescue Chief. “This new permit allows life safety systems to be fixed and put back into service without delay.”

The new permitting process reflects the county's commitment to supporting timely, code-compliant, and cost-effective repair and maintenance of vital fire and life safety systems. It aims to significantly streamline operations for local business owners and contractors by eliminating the standard plan review requirement for existing, approved systems, provided no modifications are being made to the system's original design. By removing this administrative step, the Fire Marshal’s Office is enabling faster repair times to keep community safety infrastructure fully operational without unnecessary delay.

To assist contractors and property managers with the new transition, the Fire Marshal’s Office has developed a comprehensive Emergency Repair Permit (ERP) checklist. This document clearly defines the exact scope, limitations, and eligibility requirements for the new permit. In addition, to ensure the process remains highly cost-effective, customers will only be charged a minimal fee, equivalent to the cost of a single inspection.

The ERP checklist, along with the Fire Protection Permit application form, are available immediately for download. For further questions or clarification, contact Development Services' Building Development Division at (703) 792-6924 or the Fire Marshal’s Office at (703) 792-6360.
