Nutrition Education Program
Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Family Nutrition Program provides education in the areas of basic nutrition, physical activity, safe food handling, and thrifty food shopping. Programming is provided for groups of adults and groups of youth who enroll in a lesson series of six to eight classes per series. Comprehensive education classes are offered in-person at human services offices, homeless shelters, retail stores, free clinics, pregnancy centers, farmers markets, health centers, food pantries, schools, churches, after-school programs, low-income housing communities, Head Start, schools and parent meetings. Programs are offered to SNAP- eligible residents of Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. The program is federally funded by the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) grant.
Adult Programs
- Eating Smart, Being Active
Target Audience: SNAP- eligible caregivers with children 12 years and younger
Eating Smart • Being Active is an evidence-based, direct education healthy eating, active living program that teaches participants about nutrition and physical activity through hands-on activities. The program emphasizes the skills needed to make healthy choices. Core content areas are nutrition/diet quality, food safety, food resource management, physical activity, and food security.
- In The Kitchen
Target Audience: SNAP-eligible adults 18 – 25 years old
In the Kitchen is designed to teach participants basic cooking skills, including knife safety, food safety, recipe reading, and simple cooking techniques.
Youth Programs
- Choose Health: Food, Fun, and Fitness: comprehensive nutrition and fitness curriculum composed of six hands-on lessons for 3rd to 5th graders. This curriculum was developed by Cornell University and is based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
- Eat Smart Virginia: designed to teach youth in grades 6 to 12 important life skills to promote optimal health now, and in the future. The curriculum addresses key concepts about nutrition, food resource management, food safety, and physical activity using approaches and strategies that enhance learning and empower behavior change among teens.
Teen Cuisine: cooking-based program that teaches teens from grades 6 to 12 about healthy eating.
